OPERATIONS
OVERVIEW
From executing trades to helping manage risk, the talented people on our global Operations team provide control and oversight for the businesses, products and processes that create commercial opportunity for our firm and our clients. The Operations Division of our institutional securities group (ISG) works from offices in the Americas, Europe and Asia to support this worldwide business.
Our team of experts is responsible for the post-execution trade processing and internal controls, from trade entry through settlement and custody. Operations is also responsible for Morgan Stanley and customer transactions of both primary and secondary trading transactions in commodities, equity and fixed income securities, and structured derivatives. Its core responsibilities include: trade capture and execution, trade matching and confirmation, clearing and settling trades, asset servicing, custody and control, operational risk management, and client relationship management and support.
Managing these processes with precision is the first line of defense for the firm and its clients, making Operations fundamental to the success of our business. Opportunities are available to work closely with ISG colleagues to process complex transactions, respond to business issues and client needs, assist in risk management, conduct revenue analysis and participate in firm reengineering projects.
OPERATIONS TEAMS
Securities Processing Operations (SPO) represents Morgan Stanley’s combined Global Equity, Financing and Fixed Income Cash Operations groups as a single operating unit, providing an integrated platform across these high volume businesses. These global teams are responsible for managing the daily functions of their respective trading desks. Products supported include foreign exchange, stock loans, repos for financing and cash products including corporate/government bonds, mortgage-backed securities and listed equities.
Commodities Operations provides end-to-end processing, performance metrics, control management and new product/deal diligence for Morgan Stanley’s global commodities business. This team also partners with technology experts to deliver ongoing process and systems enhancements.
Derivative Operations handles the full lifecycle of a trade for products such as credit derivatives, interest rate derivatives and equity over-the-counter derivatives.
Listed Derivatives Operations provides global transaction support for listed options and futures, including trade processing, verification, reconciliation and reporting. This team participates in every phase of the client lifecycle from marketing to ongoing relationship management.
Multi Asset Client Services (MACS) acts as a trusted provider of advice and services to institutions, hedge funds, middle-market participants and individual investors. The department provides trade date and settlement services for fixed income and equity clients, as well as collateral management, price indications and multifaceted prime brokerage support. MACS also develops and manages operations infrastructure for Morgan Stanley’s country offices and the firm’s network of agent banks around the world.
Operations Risk & Control (OpsRC) performs a number of critical functions designed to maintain integrity and transparency across the firm. Divided into five units – Core Services, Balance Sheet Control, Regulatory Reporting, Institutional Ops Risk and Client Confidentiality/Entitlements – the team focuses on implementing internal controls, business processes and management reporting that mitigate risk and fulfill regulatory reporting requirements.
Cross-Product Services (CPS) works closely with business units across the firm to support the post-trade activities of equities and fixed income securities as well as over-the-counter (OTC) derivatives. CPS’ multiple product areas provide best-in-class client service and consistent risk management. Within the group, the Cash Management team provides oversight to the firm’s liquidity position, helping to mitigate risk and reduce costs. The Position Services team processes entitlements and corporate action events impacting the firm’s clients, and the Cash and Over-the-Counter (OTC) Settlements team is responsible for the receipt of cash and securities from firm and client trading activity. Internally, CPS works closely with business units from across the firm to deliver high quality and efficient services to the businesses we support.
Global Projects Group (GPG) works in conjunction with business units from across the firm to establish processes and best practices that support Morgan Stanley’s growing businesses. The team tracks and manages progress with detailed metrics to provide centralized governance.
Banking Operations focuses on servicing loans and bank processing. This encompasses support for corporate loans, mortgage loans and bank deposits. Team members interact daily with business units, sales and trading desks, borrowers, lenders, bond investors, legal counsel and bank agents.
OPERATIONS ANALYST PROGRAM
Our goal is to attract, develop and retain the best people. We can only exercise control and oversight if we have the right people with the right skills in the right jobs.
Analysts begin their career with classroom and project-based training to provide them with business, technical and professional knowledge. The curriculum includes an orientation to the firm, overview of the securities industry, senior speaker seminars, extensive functional knowledge training, accounting and systems training and desk visits.
The program provides development of key personal and professional competencies and offers social and networking events. Analysts are assigned peer advisors and senior sponsors to aid their transition into the organization. Upon successful completion of the training program, analysts are assigned to one of the operations departments. However, the firm’s investment in your career does not stop there. Analysts enter a multi-year training program, a framework that encourages continual development. Based on performance, individuals can fast track to the next career level.
Newly hired Analysts are engaged in daily operations and have opportunities to tackle a variety of special projects. Operations activities include desk/trade support, client service, transaction exception handling, settlement and reconciliation, risk management and control, corporate actions and collateral management. Analysts are also engaged in developing, producing and analyzing operational performance metrics to help identify areas for improvement. Various project roles provide opportunities to understand business processes and to assist with developing solutions that enable growth and reduce costs.
QUALIFICATIONS
Analysts are expected to complete their Bachelors/Masters degree by April 2010 or June 2010, with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.4. Strong candidates will also possess excellent leadership, interpersonal, and communication skills. Fluency in written and spoken English – CET (College English Test) 6 or equivalent is required. All majors are encouraged to apply.
